Getting here
The Hiscox Building

A twenty-minute walk from York train station and ten minutes from York Minster — in the Hungate’s quarter of the medieval city, beside the city walls.
By train: York station is served by LNER, CrossCountry and TransPennine Express. The building is a 12-minute walk.
By car: Monk Bar car park (YO31 7JL, 5 min walk) and Foss Bank (YO31 9JS, 8 min walk).
On the tour
Ticket: Please bring your ticket with you, either on your phone or as a printed copy.
Numbers: Access is by prior booking only. There is no walk-in option, in order to maintain a sensible group size
Duration: Approximately 90 minutes, covering all four floors.
Photography: Welcome throughout. Altough we have a clean desk policy, please do not photograph monitors, papers or whiteboards.
Toilets are available on all floors, to the left of the lifts.
Donation & charity
The tours raise money through ticket sales and donations.
The Hiscox Foundation match-funds every pound made on the tour. Since 2018, these tours have raised over £39,000.
In 2026, all proceeds go to Guide Dogs UK, who provide life-changing guide dogs and other services to people living with sight loss.
Access
The building has step-free access throughout, including a lift to all floors. Guide dogs and assistance animals are welcome.
The tour involves standing and walking for approximately 90 minutes. If you have mobility concerns, please get in touch in advance.

Tour dates for 2026 are being announced through the year. New dates typically sell out within weeks of announcement.

Your guide is the tour's founder John Jobling, who is passionate about sharing the history of art.

Frequently asked questions
No — the tours are an independent, volunteer-run initiative. They are not organised by Hiscox as a company, though Hiscox generously provides access to the building and the Hiscox Foundation match-funds donations. The tours were started by John Jobling in 2018.
Tour sizes are kept small to preserve the quality of the experience. Exact capacity depends on the date — check TicketSource for availability on specific tours.
There tours are not suitable for young children. The tour is primarily pitched at adults, A-level students and University students with an interest in art.
